what even are any of these “alternative sites to tumblr in case it dies” everyone’s suggesting like i’ve never heard of any of these in my life do you really expect me to create an account on babar the elephant dot com or some shit and follow you there
In response to the NSFW ban being enacted by Tumblr Staff, on December 17th 2018 I propose that we all log off of our Tumblr accounts for 24 hours.
The lack of respect and communication between staff and users is stark. Users have been begging staff to delete the porn bot outbreak, which has plagued the website for well over a year. The porn bots oftentimes send people asks and messages, trying to get them to go to a website full of viruses. They also spam advertisements on others posts.
Users have also begged that Tumblr ban neo-nazis, child porn, and pedophiles, all which run rampant on the site. The site/app got so bad that it was taken off the app store.
However, instead of answering the users, Tumblr has instead taken the liberty to ban all NSFW content, regardless of age. But users have already run into issues of their SFW content being marked as sensitive and being flagged as NSFW, not allowing them to share their work.
Not only does this discriminate again content creators, but it also discriminates against sex workers. Disgustingly, the ban will be enacted on December 17 which is also International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.
This ban is disgusting, and while I (and plenty of others) welcome porn bots and child porn being banned, the Tumblr filtration system is broken. It tags artistic work’s nipples as NSFW (when it is art), it tags SFW art as NSFW (when it is not), and does not stop the porn bots, neo-nazis and dozens of other issues.
This ban is discriminatory. This ban is ineffective. This ban is unacceptable.
To protest, log off of your Tumblr account for the entirety of December 17th. Log off at 12 am EST or 9PM PST and stay off for 24 hours. Don’t post. Don’t log on. Don’t even visit the website. Don’t give them that sweet ad revenue.
Tumblr’s stock has already taken a hard hit. Let’s make it tank. Maybe then they will listen to the users.
OMG so recently I took part in this community spotlight for Sims VIP (which you can read here) and planned this post for it BUT….
In light of tumblr banning everything & everyone… I just want to take this moment to say how thankful I am for all my amazing tumblr followers. Just incase you or I loose our tumblrs, from the bottom of my heart, I love you, I love this community and I love that somehow we all ended up on tumblr sharing pics of our sims.
Hopefully this is all just a bit of panic and everything will be fine, I doubt anything will happen to SENTATE either…. or at least I hope (2 of my posts got flagged but ones of my hand tattoo and the others some boots so I think thats chill)
I also want to personally thank Lana/@sssvitlans for being our go to source for everything. I hope tumblr doesn’t shut you down because you’re literally a CC angel sent from heaven to protect us all from having boring games. I really hope this turns out ok for you x
A self reblog for info on what to do since people are already panicking…
Petitions don’t work in this context. Tagging staff doesn’t do anything. Panicking isn’t gonna help but it sure is gonna stress you out personally.
It’s very, very shitty but just try to remain calm, go through your posts, and maybe look into alternatives! I really love Pillowfort, personally! Plus there’s always the old standby of Livejournal!
you know like being a tumblr user for like. 8 years this hellsite has gone through so many changes and i always forget them bc we end up adapting but this is like one of those changes that doesn’t only hit individual blogs but rather the communities as a whole who are generally good and don’t deserve to be banned or flagged or whatever the hell it is.
i’m like jaded about it at this point but i really think they’ll try to fix things to not be as harsh (much like the whole safe mode fiasco from earlier) but if they don’t i just wanna say a giant thanks to lana for all your hard work over the years in both the resources you provided us and basically being the glue in our simblr community…and thanks to the community itself for u know. being a great community
Hellfire aside, remember that your mental health is much more important than this site
If this whole situation is stressing you out – close the app, close the tab and breath. Leave for a walk, read a book, play a game – don’t look at everyone freaking out if it has a bad influence on you. If you’re afraid you miss something important ask a friend to update you on the situation.
This is not the end of the world and I’m sure a lot of people will stay here. We’ll see how it all goes and we’ll do this together. Don’t overwhelm yourself. You’re doing amazing, sweetie ❤️💕
This is also a message to all blocked people, no matter why they were blocked – if someone shares their other, even personal, accounts, you have no right to go after them, mail them to get the access to their WordPress, follow from fake accounts on Twitter and even add them on Discord. This is not your place and such behavior is very, very triggering and is a red flag.
In the sidebar where it says “Blogs,” click on the blog you want to back up.
You’ll see the page that lets you edit the appearance of the blog, etc. At the bottom, you should see a button that says “Export blog.” Click that.
Tumblr will now take a shitload of time to create the backup (hours, or maybe even days if your blog has a ton of media posts) but eventually it’ll send you a link to download the backup. You don’t have to keep your browser open for that time, by the way.
Once you’ve got the link, click it and download! It should give you a ZIP file with a folder of HTML files for the posts and a folder for the media files.
